The SSID is really just a sign saying this router has this name, for connecting a wifi device it very much depends on if you enabled security such as WEP or WPA, if you did then you'll need the seperate passkey (could be anything from 32/64 characters upwards to connect to the wifi.

Try a scan on the laptop, look for your SSID and then it should tell you what encryption is on the signal (probably in your wifi manager on the laptop)
