I'm a big fan of the kindle, would recommend it to anyone - got my mum one for Christmas.
I'd say yes to a case I carry mine around in a rucksack a lot of the time - not sure about a light, guess the question is how often you read in the dark? - I don't, so I didn't need one.
Can't comment on the unoffical case - I got the offical plain leather case - seems ok, no complaints.
