The public are the only people who can force the government to reconsider their position. As such, the students need the public on their side to initiate any change. This is not going to happen if the public think that students are a bunch of rioting, violent yobs.
You can argue that the media are presenting them as such, and I would agree. They are. However, if no students were doing stuff like this, there would be nothing for the media to hype.
