Any technical reason why this is the case?
Or is it more a customer satisfaction issue?
Or a decent way of making additional revenue?

Haven't read anywhere the TiVo box contains a web-browser - does it? Be interesting if it does.

Or is it the walled garden of approved internet-connected apps we have seen and read about?

Won't happen I suspect, but would be a good option for those comfortable with the product and their ability to make the swap.
It may be an option in the future, but for now it will only be manned install. We need to make sure the customer experience is excellent with this premium product
