that appears to result in BSOD and in theory a system restore would sort it

Its a tough one. First thing I would do is set the bios to fail safes and see. Next thing would be a different gfx card just to rule it out and possibly a screen
Next it would have to be a reinstall

Can you try a system restore further back?
