Actually, I don't know about the specific case in question, but I have a friend who used to work in BBC news.
She was told that the BBC are given full information on all major criminal cases by the police, and they frequently do hold it back. They know because, apparently, in the event the info is leaked, they can help control the flow, but will not do so unless they know everything.
