Seems the driver is common to more than one huawei modem.

I was able to install the drivers for an E1630 (T-mobile USB modem) and that in turn allowed me to communicate with the mi-fi unit and reflash it's firmware.

I would have tried that earlier, but I didn't have the other modem with me at the time.
