Sorry to hear this Pbryanw, have you tried going through windows own troubleshooter to fix the problem, sometimes it works
Control Panel->Action Centre->Troubleshooting->Appearance and Personalization->Aero
Alternatively Start->type in Aero and click "Find and fix problems with transparency and visual effects"
Also check the service "Desktop Window Session Manager" is running Auto at start up and maybe re-run your Windows Experience Index.
