You can only change the volume of the V-HD box if you are using the SCART output. The volume control doesn't affect the digital outputs (HDMI and optical).

Similarly auto-detect is only available on SCART. Some TVs can detect an HDMI signal, but it isn't standard in the way that SCART switching is.
