I don't think you could transfer Kindle books to iBooks as the kindle format (azw) is DRM protected, BUT the iPad has a free kindle app so you wouldn't need to.

As has been mentioned the calbre software is great for converting formats. I've been able to convert all my stuff (that isn't drm'd) freely into the correct format for my kindle.

I wouldn't say ALL books are cheaper - but it does seem that most are.
