I live in the town where I teach.I teach in the town where I live..and I suspect I have far more connection with what's going on with young school leavers than you do..I meet old pupils ALL the time when out and about,most of them are working, some have gone on to college and thence to university or work.

As to your experiences of old teachers I can only say mine was different.I did keep in touch with those that I respected and until my school was closed and amalgamated into another I went back regularly to see staff.Even then I met them out and about my town. How sad you felt no affection or respect for your old teachers enough to let them know how you were doing.It's something teachers love when old pupils make the effort to keep in touch..

In fact one old pupil married one of my second cousins..and I know she is still working.
