In my last terraced house I had a Netgear DG834 within inches of the BT line into the front of the house.

No problems using laptop at the end of a 70foot garden at the back of the house through two brick walls.

As already said, try moving channel or send it back. If on ADSL it'always a good idea to have a spare router/ADSL modem. If on a cable modem you can plumb your PC direct into the modem.
