Would these be suitable for connection to a VM cable modem and, if so, how would they be connected to it?

Our PC is connected direct to the cable modem via an ethernet cable which is fine as we don't need to move it. If we wanted to be able to connect another PC/laptop to the internet would a single pair of these devices be enough? i.e. could we leave the PC connected by cable and use one plug to connect to the modem and the other to connect to the other device? Or would we need a plug to connect to the PC as well as any other device?
