A wireless N router should be capable of delivering the full speed that a 50Mbps cable connection can deliver (~ 6MBps) under good conditions.

If your current router is plain 802.11g it couldn't deliver 5MBps. Although they are called 54Mbps devices that is shared up and down and in practice all they'll deliver is ~ 25Mbps ~ 3MBps. If you are getting a genuine 5MBps then your current router must be one of the "Super G" models advertised as 108Mbps.

If you are in the same room then running ethernet should be easy and that will definitely deliver the goods.
