Kaspersky is certainly not a bad choice, my old man had 2009 and the only thing he had any trouble with was the spam filter. Maybe also look at Avira

The trouble is once you start adding stuff like Sandbox`s, anti-this, anti that it does become confusing. What OS is he on, does he download much stuff and is he a reasonably safe surfer?
Is the default firewall and a free AV not going to cut it..
