767MB of Ram should be plenty to run XP for just normal use. Virgin PC Guard is a resource hog, you should get rid and use a less hungry alternative such as Avast Free or Microsoft Security Essentials. Maybe even Comodo Internet Security which is very light in day to day use.
Maybe use a lighter AV combined with sandboxie. Are you behind a router? If so you have inbound protection due to NAT (probably with SPI).

Every system is different and some may bog down one machine but not another, give a few a try and see which you like best.
