It's a way of writing data to HDDs that can by used by Windows (but isn't, by default) and is used by default when writing data to HDDs by Mac OSX. In fact, OSX has to be installed on an HDD written this way.

Not sure there is any real advantage for me partitioning my HDD this way as the HDD in question is not used for OSX, so I am not sure why I'd do it..
