The whois should at least tell you when the domain expires..
You could do a email to
postmaster@XXXXXXXX.XXX but as v0id states just because a domain doesn;t have a website on it doesn't mean to say it's not in use especially as you probably haven't checked for subdomains (not all websites start WWW) and/or MX records
