Re: Rapidshare News

They have gone from a flat fee access price per month scheme to a quota based scheme with some perils attached.
Tiers 1-3 are as follows. (please note this is per day)
Tier 1 - Rapidsmall - 4 Rapids per day, guaranteed hosting of 10Gb anything above this may be deleted after 60 days if not deleted. You may only download 1Gb per day.

From here on the list will be size, price, store, down.

Rapidsmall - 4, 10, 1
Rapidmedium - 20, 50, 5
Rapidlarge - 78, 200, 20

Let's say you are on rapidsmall, and you download 8Gb, you would expect to be moved to the large pack at 78 Rapids for the day yes? no.

You start on the Rapidsmall and you pay the 4 Rapids, when you exceed the 1Gb you get moved to Rapidmedium which doesn't cost 16 Rapids, (the difference between the tariffs) but the Full 20. Then, as you pass the 5Gb mark you get moved to the Large tier with again the FULL charge of 78 Rapids. - Total cost - 102 Rapids.

But wait, it's not over yet.

You can NOT downgrade for 20 hours. Thus you may get kept on the Large Tariff an extra day, costing another 78 Rapids before you can downgrade, Thus the total may be 180 Rapids instead of 82 (78 for the first day, down to 4 again for the second)

For people who host a lot of information on there (and there are a lot of legitimate uses for offsite file storage) the cost can be 449 Rapids per day to guarantee the storage of their files. The overall cost increase to larger users is over 200% with much less on offer for the price. There is a great deal of outrage building over this move and I am already seeing the migration to other hosting providers starting amongst the NetAdmins I know who use the service.

There is another sting in the tail from RS also. Currently no-one I know of who has tried to delete files from RS after relocating their chosen host to another provider has been able to delete them. They show as deleted but after a refresh they return.
