Because it's not anti-competitive. A lot of platform holders decide who goes on their platform. It would be more worrying if iPhone OS was on many platforms and a de-facto standard and they started removing apps that compete with their core business (such as web browsers).

They suffer when developers refuse to develop for such a platform though.

Such tribalism is exactly the type of thing that causes competitors to underestimate the impact Apple can have when it enters a new market, like it did with the iPod, like it did with the iPhone.

Better is a subjective term and whilst it is certainly true you can almost always find a better specced item at a lower price than Apple's offerings it doesn't mean it's better. The quality of execution from Apple, from the UI, the marketing, the 'feel' and build quality of devices and all the attention to small details are a big reason Apple do well.

You can dismiss that as Apple Fanboyism but look at the success of Apple's products. It's clearly not limited to Apple fans buying them.
