One comment

I have now removed the USB connection between the modem and desktop and everything is fine

BUT

Prior to that, I had
USB connection Modem-Desktop
+
Ethernet connection Modem - Router
+
Ethernet connection Router - Desktop

with that configuration everything was working so maybe the comments about "you cannot use USB and Ethernet together as it will cause loss of connection." .....isn't right
