There are simple ways to test that Facebook is as private as you need it.
First is obviously stop posting stuff that you wish to be private if you have 'friends' that aren't among those that you wish to know your private stuff.
Secondly, create a second FB account and do a search for yourself. If you're even findable at all then check what can be seen by someone who's not on your friends list and amend if necessary. Simple.
The main problem with Facebook & privacy is that people don't know how to (or are too lazy to) look into how to make things private. It's all there if you look for it.
