For me there is no such thing as a wasted vote every vote is worth something whatever it results in in terms of mp's. Just because we have the so called big three doesn't mean they should automatically get a vote although i did vote for one of them. In a democracy surely we have learnt to value the right of the individual to vote as they feel free too and if we don't then are we really a democracy. For some maybe voting for some party other then a big three is a way of protesting without spoiling their vote or just not going to vote which seems more productive then spoiling or not voting.

As for should voting be compulsory no i do not think it should as that is another part of the whole democracy thing you have the right to vote and you have the right to not vote if that is what you want to do. I would maybe back a system they have in some countrys where those who do vote get something for doing it but no no one should ever be forced to vote.
