i can access where the tested downloads of small files are but cannot seem to unpack them, even if they are not rar, or zip etc, once i can do that then i'll try to move on to configure newsgroups which ive been doing with windows for years.
Sorry to ramble but i really like linux and would love to be able to do with it what i do with windows, maybe virtually like wine or something.

What exactly happens when you right click & "extract here" or what happens if you just double click on the first .rar file? Does the archive manager open at all? Does it display the contents on said .rar if it does open & can you not drag & drop the files directly from the archive manager if it
is displaying the contents?
Did you try Richard M`s advice about installing the unrar package?
