personally, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Bin Laden died a long time ago, but the US need a figure of hate - a face of terrorism if you will - in order that the public continue to feel that they are justified to still occupy Afganistan and surrounding areas. If think we are all aware that oil plays a major part in the US forces being there. yes, there are insurgent forces there too, but these are groups of people who are not terrorists, they are simply trying to fight the occupation (and I don't use that word lightly - what the US is doing there IS an occupation by definition). much the same as in the second world war, there was the French Resistance. Natives trying to force out the occupying forces. in this case, those forces are US/UK lead.

if i might also add - I am not saying the forces are wrong for doing what they are doing. they are not the decision makers in all this - the governments are. the forces are simply following the orders of those in authority. although I might not agree with the reasoning for them being there, I still hold them in great respect for the job they do. they are braver men and women than I am.
