It's not term generally used for black people in South Africa instead it's the equivalent of the N word as used in the UK/US for people of african descent..

The term used genericaly was Bantu (which covered over 400 tribes of people who spoke the Bantu language which covered most of southern and central africa) but even that was considered incorrect and in the '70s it's usage was officially removed and instead the term "plural" was used (gawd know's why)

Remember though that the term black in SA only took into account the original bantu people and didn't cover what came to be classified as "coloured" which was most people of mixed race and even covered asian and indian people living there if they had any sub-saharan descent in them (for example the cape-malay mix descendants of the original slaves of the Dutch "Jan" Compagnie (VOC) or the san (bushmen of the cape/kalihari area)
