This is actually old news, as he passed away last week, but I still think it's worthy of a thread.
Alex Chilton was the front man of the Box Tops who had a number one hit with
The Letter in the 60s. Chilton was 16 at the time. He never went on to replicate that commercial success, but had a loyal following in his subsequent career, and is cited by many musicians (such as REM) as a major influence on their work.
