Years ago I was in the TV department of Alders (remember them?) and they had two tv's next to one another - one 50hz, one 100hz. The difference was astonishing.

100Hz was useful for reducing flicker on CRTs, it's true. On digital displays (LCD/plasma) which don't refresh in the same way, it's much less useful. Many 100Hz TVs are now better than many 50Hz TVs but it's not because of the 100Hz, it's because of all the other componentry etc.
(The best thing about modern 100Hz TVs is that most of them also do 96Hz and so can play 24fps material without pulldown judder.)
