Well if we send the 4 best teams in England to the Champions League it makes sense to send the top 4. They are the best. Otherwise it may be the 4th best team in England or it may be the 7th best team who won a play off.
You say Liverpool might finish out of the top 4 and if that happens the team that takes their place deserves the Champions League spot because they were the better team that season.
My main problem is it partly ignores the form and results of the teams during the season to focus on a couple of games. So a team can finish 10/20 points behind but be sent to the Champions League. It may make it more exciting but it defeats the purpose of a league in a sense.
