Have you actually set up an alias for this @virginmedia.com account, instead of say
ab123c4567@virginmedia.com to something along the lines of
johnsmith@virginmedia.com as unless you have set up an alias it will never ever work.
If you have an alias and you cannot get the instructions to work on your @virginmedia.com address then you are doing something wrong which is usually not ticking the SSL boxes and changing the server numbers and forgetting the tick box for this server requires authentication.
