when i first attempted the install my router, the internet light on the router would never be a steady green, regardless of power downs and restarts, it was only when i swapped pc's and rebooted the router i got a steady green light.
i'll attempt that from the pc that can connect and see what happens.

You need to check if you do not have a static IP set on the network card, it should be set to obtain an IP address automatically, also you need to ensure that it is actually enabled because you need a direct link to the router to set it up with or without the disk.
