Who is "they"? There's next to no way that a near earth object could be on a collision course without it becoming common knowledge because the scientific community do not belong to a private organisation that could keep it quiet.

Nasa aren't the only ones capable of finding near earth objects, and they definitely wouldn't be the only ones who knew about them. There's independent observatories all over the globe that are constantly scanning the sky, one of them would definitely notice it, and they have no ties to any government so would have no benefit in keeping it quiet.
