he wanted me to connect the router directly to the PC but couldnt at the moment due to my son being online on his PS3

what kind of test would I need to run from my desktop ?
I would say one a few things

* Over contended
* Try a different speed test to be honest

Also, when you redo the speed test disconnect everything and do it connected directly to the modem.
