if this works (and it probably will) my guess is the VPN software being used is checking the embedded IP in the packets being sent, and dropping them cos your machines IP is an internal (192. something or whatever) but the ip being routed to is your public IP.

I'm not an expert on this stuff, and I'm sure someone here can explain it more accurately than me. An easy (ish) fix is to put you lappie into the DMZ on your router so it doesn't NAT the traffic.
