Download Avira anti virus, currently rated as one of the highest quality AV programs to date and its free.
Also get Spybot search and destroy and "immunize" your PC, and finally use Firefox.

These programs will keep you protected from pretty much anything you find on the internet, if you really want a firewall too, feel free to go for any lightweight one.

Stay away from PC guard because it sucks ass for protection. How do I know this? I am a technician at a PC repair store and we get LOADS of PCs flooded with viruses and they all have PC guard installed.

If you don't want Avira then I can suggest Avast, they are pretty much the most decent and free programs around, AVG isn't really powerful so I don't recommend it.
