I would check the SCART lead is in square. The plug can look like it is seated but be twisted slightly, this can cause sound to fail,.

How many HDMI ports on the TV? Does the DVD have HDMI?

Assuming TV has two HDMI and DVD has HDMI out then I would suggest.

V+ HDMI to TV
DVD HDMI to TV
SCART (VCR) to DVD SCART In.

Depending on the DVD recorder you could also have (as I do) SCART breakout lead on V+ with a composite video and stereo audio in on the DVD. The cable is smaller, more flexible and easier to route than a SCART lead. Mechanically it gives more positive connection to.
