Limited or no connectivity problem
Hi everyone, hope I'm posting this in the right place - I'm assuming the problem lies somewhere with our router/modem, although there's an outside chance it may be XP/Vista.
Yesterday morning my internet connection was fine. When I got home from work I couldn't access the net at all, although I was connecting to the LAN. I'm in a shared house and my other two housemates have no problems. They both run vista, I run XP.
My problem is that I get 'the limited or no connectivity' problem and most of the time my computer does not receive an IP address from the network. However, even when it does, it still won't let me on the net. I have tried bypassing our wireless router/switch and plugging straight into the modem but that doesn't make any difference, and I've also switched off the virgin modem and restarted it all to no avail.
Interestingly my housmate's laptop had the same problem initially when we tried plugging it into the modem, even though it had been working fine wirelessly, but the restart of the modem seemed to solve that problem. However, it didn't help my computer at all (though it did temporarily get me an IP address.
I am getting received and sent packets.
My housemate was saying that Virgin were upgrading their service from 2mbps to 10, and I wondered if that might be playing a part, or if it is something to do with the fact that my housemates are running Vista and I XP. But I'm assuming it's a router/modem thing. Although to be honest I'm totally flummoxed, and it's doing my head in!
Any help greatly appreciated (obviously I'm posting from work now).
