Yes that could well be an explanation but it begs the question of why.

Either a site requires registration or it doesn't unless, of course, if an article proves to be so popular that charging for access to it becomes possible. But then why relax the registration necessity after only a few minutes?

I wondered if it had anything to do with where you were linking from. But even so, why the limitation?
