You certainly don't 'need' it, though it's future proof. Wireless N has been around for a while, though only recently acknowledged. It is the fastest type of wireless at the moment, and likely to stay like that for a while.

If you want 'N', your router and ALL wireless devices you want fast wireless speeds on must have wireless N capabilities.

If you try and transfer PC-to-PC, one PC is N, the router is N, but the other PC is G...then it can only go the speeds of G...because that's the slowest. It can't go any faster than it's slowest.

In summary, don't buy a wireless N router, unless you have wireless N devices to capitalise on it.
