The VM telephony service may run on legacy Cable & Wireless exchanges and infrastructure backbone but I don't think that is really the Mercury side of the business that we knew..
The business part of Mercury was sold onto Npower, but the residential telephone part of Mercury is part of Virgin Media, that never went to Npower. Although as you point out, backbone telephone services (ie 999) are provided by Cable & Wireless.
