I think Fridays are a much underutilised resource. Given that the teams are all there with the kit , circuits providing marshalling and safety cover and paying spectators looking to see stuff why not let them run three cars on Friday with the third car being available for a pay driver in the case of teams looking for funding or a real test for rookie drivers in a representative environment. To limit track crowding teams could be limited to two cars on track at one time. Tweak the engine regs to give teams an allocation of engines for the year to be split between the drivers as necessary. That way the Friday drivers could always have the old engines............

the trouble with that idea is it is quite a sensible one. The only problem with that is if the F1 teams are at a race then no matter what they say they will do setup work for the race. This was the problem last time they had third drivers and longer running on a Friday. No actual testing got done just race work. Monday after the GP might be a better idea
