Cable Forum - View Single Post - Poor signal even though router is in same room!

I am using an old Belgin 54g router. Even when using my laptop in the same room as the router the signal fluctuates between excellent to very poor (only one bar) and then keeps disconnecting.

Does anyone know what could be the cause? Also I'm out to get a new router. Any recommendations?
