You are right of course. I completely forgot about CAP. Crazy Agricultural Policy.
We
were self sufficient in food, it was cheap and Farmers earned a good living.
Then we joined The Common Market (as it was) and in this new realm of wine lakes and beef mountains, food prices all went up, Farmers started to go out of business, land lay fallow and we start to import food again.
WOW! I guess that's progress then.
