There's 3 types of channel on Virgin Media:

1) Channels Virgin Media pay nothing to carry - typically channels they have to carry (Public Service Broadcasters) or "spin offs" from them, such as the ITV and Five channels.

2) Channels Virgin Media pay to carry - for example the Sky suite of channels. These are the services which Virgin Media will market to customers.

3) Channels Virgin Media get paid to carry - these aren't really channels which Virgin can market, but the carriers will pay VM to give them better market reach. These are normally shopping channels.

The problem is the balance between 2 and 3 - 3 provides guaranteed income, whereas 2 requires marketing etc. to realise profit.
