The judge was hampered by the fact that not one of the three took any responsibility and thus were not charged with murder but were charged with lesser crimes with smaller tariffs.
He did the best he could by making the proviso that they should not be released until they were no danger to small children.
So because the police could not point to the actual guilty person they appear to have been leniently treated.What we need in cases like this is to be able to have a blanket charge so that people can't avoid prosecution by pointing the finger at others who were in the same vicinity.
