I would like to install Windows 7 onto my machine, preferably a complete format (as W7 now seems stable).

My current rig has a 500GB hard drive and I have a IDE 80GB I could use if needed for backups or what ever.

So, I can download Windows 7 from MDNA (legal free download for students) and burn it to a disc.

What would be the best option for me? Format my 500GB HDD and use the 80GB one to back up my data? What would you suggest.
