Have had one pc connected directly to modem since yesterday with no problem. Just beginning to wonder if it's a flaky modem (netgear wgr614) and/or cable?
Going to leave this pc connected for another couple of days abd then replace with other pc to see what happens.

All power levels are fine for an EX-NTL connection and could well be an issue with the router.
You can get replacement ethernet cables from ASDA for £2.98 and most Pound shops for a £1 and even from Screwfix cheaply as well.
