Can anyone throw light on this point please - regarding PC setting when directly connecting modem to PC
i.e.
"tried connecting modem direct to another laptop (hardwire ethernet) - but still nothing - should that work OK or do I need to make changes setting to laptop IP settings etc ( thinks it on auto ip & dns) - i can't remember pre router days"

and I'd like to remove router from equation
