i think teh qnap ones have to use a special qnap storage device, thats what it looked like from the pictures but i will look into it.
Thanks for the links. i think if the camera can FTP the files that will work ok i can setup the NAS as a FTP server (i think it is by default).

I do hope you realise I was slightly tongue-in-cheek....
The only thing I would say is that most cameras and specially at night won't have sufficient quality to provide an identifiable picture to the police. I used to work in a travel agency with a foreign currency bureau and we had security cameras with recorded pictures on professional tapes - even those were pretty poor quality and you would be hard pressed to identify anyone.
