Mouse problems

I picked up one of these for a few quid but I've been having problems with it.

If I plug it in via USB then generally it works but often the cursor stutters, as if the machine is slowing down and USB isn't getting much power.

That's not the main issue though, it comes with the green ps2 plug adaptor to connect it to the mouse socket but when I do, the computer doesn't know it's there - the cursor never responds.

The laser underneath the mouse lights up so there's power getting to it - so it's not the green adapter as if I use it to plug a different optical mouse in, that works fine.

The drivers are found straight away when I plug it in via usb so would might this be? I really would prefer to use the proper mouse socket, not the usb.
